In the Backyard Farm

Many city and town ordinances are changing with the times. For many, farming isn’t just for those outside the town limits! Whether you have chickens for eggs (or meat), goats for milk (or meat), bees for honey, dogs for protection, or any of the above for companionship, it’s all possible in a small area of the backyard.

DSC00882Dog Days of Summer

July 14, 2011

The dog days of summer have arrived. And Jaxon decided it was time too cool off. In the creek. After he crawled over the fence. Jaxon’s a dirty dog. There is mud between here and the creek. Sadie, however, lays being a good girl. She stays in the yard. She doesn’t crawl or jump overContinue Reading →

July 12, 2011

It’s been a while since I posted on my backyard farm… As with any farm, whether it’s out in the country on 100 acres or right here inside the city limits on less than 1 acre, things happen to our animals. For reasons we don’t even know. I had such grand plans 15 months agoContinue Reading →

Yesterday was a 4-egger day – from extra-small to extra-large! Finally, all of the girls have gotten down to business!

August 31, 2010

The only downside of having a flock of chickens in town (well, besides the rule against roosters) – is their lack of fresh greenery and bugs. They have cleaned their pen area up quite well. Every day when I go into collect the egg (still just an egg!), they plead with me to go outsideContinue Reading →

DSC06399I’ve Got Eggs!

August 30, 2010

The girls are growing up! At least two of them have started laying eggs! I think it’s these two — Ellie Mae and Rosy. Last week, I had two eggs a day…for two days. Now they give me one a day. See the one on the right with the light blue flecks? I get oneContinue Reading →

DSC05993I Miss the Noise

August 15, 2010

The hen house has been quiet this last week. I miss the noise. Even if the neighborhood doesn’t. I should have known from the beginning those 2 noisy chicks were roosters, they were the most vocal of the bunch. Now, it’s quiet. And no, shushing the roosters did not work! They just don’t like authority!

August 8, 2010

Thems not fluffy butts, thems there ROOSTER butts! On July 21, 2010, at 7:15 in the morning, Kooky (one of my Barred Rocks) debuted as a rooster with a sickly little crow. It took him 2 days to get the COCK-A-D00DLE-DOOOOOOO down to a nice little sound. Then on August 3rd, at 7:05 in theContinue Reading →

DSC04533Chicks Update: Week 1

April 11, 2010

Our chicks are growing, eating, drinking, and playing well!  It’s fascinating to just sit and watch them.  Each of them have their own traits, just like a baby. The chicks moved on up to a condo this week!  Using what I had, I used the dog crate that we used for our two large dogs….thisContinue Reading →

April 4, 2010

It’s been a year of wanting and preparing, well mostly wanting…….and yesterday, I FINALLY picked up my chicks!  The coop is built.  We do have the fencing but it just needs to be put up.  They are just cute and fluffy….and the dogs DO NOT know what to think of all the noise going onContinue Reading →
