It’s been a while since I posted on my backyard farm…
As with any farm, whether it’s out in the country on 100 acres or right here inside the city limits on less than 1 acre, things happen to our animals. For reasons we don’t even know.
I had such grand plans 15 months ago when I brought home 6 little chicks from TSC. I had visions of 6 eggs every day.

Then there were two. Two barred rock roosters. Kooky and Nancy just couldn’t live inside these city limits with their extreme vocals and went home with our grandson (who lives out in the country).

My visions turned to 4 eggs every day. And I was getting 4 eggs every day.

Now, something has happened to both of my Rhode Island Reds, Blueberry Bear and Rosy. We don’t know what happened. There is fence all around the pen including the top. There was an escape last summer–into the back yard. That was puzzling then. So I’m not sure if something was able to get into the pen or if they got out of the pen. They just aren’t here. We haven’t seen any wild hens around the neighborhood, though! It’s puzzling now, too.
Now we have just Chancy and Ellie Mae left, the Golden Sex Links.

Now I’m getting 2 eggs a day.
Just Chancy & Ellie Mae

I live in the country and things “happen” to our animals. Our neighbors try to shoot them, they sick their dogs on them, You name it. We have lost all 15 of our ducks that did nothing to anyone due to the neighbors dog. We actually had a neighbor claim because our chickens are free range their dogs got worms. It is rediculous. People have forgotten and lost touch with where food comes from. Their attitudes are there are grocery stores so you don’t need to have a farm next to us. We have Dairy goats as well and we have 11 hens and 3 roosters. Our farm is 20 acres but our neighbors in their mcmansions are too good to live by a farm.
Ahhh. But these two are VERY pretty! Perhaps they will need some baby sexlink younger sisters in the spring? And I sure wish I could send you some of what our 6 girls are giving us! I sure am glad we got the sexlink chicks – even though I really would like some speckled ones, too.
