Colten1_AfterPhotoShop Actions: Perfect Portrait

Posted by Cindy Comment

The CoffeeShop Blog is one of my favorite go-to sites for anything PhotoShop. Rita has tutorials, templates and actions that she explains to you. I’ve seriously had quite a few Ah-Ha! moments over there. She has it figured out!

While I wish I had time in my life to figure everything out that PhotoShop can do step-by-step, I just don’t. Priorities. But I am so happy that others do…and they help us minions out.

While I was with Colten last week, I ended up with a couple great photos (you never know when you’re shooting in action mode what you’ll end up with!) that I felt were excellent portrait candidates. Rita’s CoffeeShop Perfect Portrait action was one of the first actions I ever downloaded and installed…when I first learned what an “action” was. Actions are simply recorded step-by-steps that only takes a click of the mouse to apply to your image.

Straight out of the camera. He was in the middle of a roll and must have stopped for two seconds to see what I was doing.

With the Perfect Portrait action.

Since not every photo requires the same editing, there are options layers you can adjust for the perfect portrait. After cropping, these were my layer edits:
Urban Grit: 40% opacity white brush on the background area for high contrast
White Whites: 25% opacity white brush on the whites of the eyes
Eye Define: 100% opacity black brush on eyes and eyelashes
Soft Skin: 25% opacity white brush on the face and hands
Vignette: On

Straight out of the camera. Another shot with giggles and mid-roll.

With the Perfect Portrait action.
Urban Grit: 40% opacity white brush on the background area for high contrast
White Teeth: 25% opacity white brush on teeth
Eye Define: 100% opacity black brush on eyes and eyelashes
Soft Skin: 25% opacity white brush on the face and hands
Vignette: On

Amazing! I really love how both of these turned out with very little work on my end–just the knowledge of using PhotoShop, actions and following Rita’s directions of what to do with each layer.

While I was on her blog this morning getting the link to this action, I find she’s updated this action with CoffeeShop Perfect Portrait 3! Last year! I feel behind the times. There was an update in between that I must have missed, too. I love the original action and I’ve gotten used to it, but I had to download the new action and give it a test run. She added an auto skin smoothing step that uses Replace Color as the action is running (that takes input from you).

Here are the results using PP3 on the above photos.

Notice the difference in the face–this is the auto skin smoothing step. Besides this added step, I used the same edits on each layer.

Rita not only offers actions and templates as free downloads, she explains them in a very understanding way. Give her a visit!
